Become a "Save the Tabernacle Hero"

New roof - August 2023

We are so thankful to all our supporters. The June 2023 Raise the Roof Fundraiser was successful. Thanks so much to Mas Roofing, Freeport, IL, and their crew for all the hard work it took to replace a roof on a hundred-plus-year-old building. The physical work they did and the generosity of their financial contribution towards the final bill, can't be thanked enough.

accomplishments by end of 2022

Kathleen Wilken, Joe Kanosky, and Ron Schneider (Freeport Park District Executive Director) signed the 20-year lease to the Save the Tabernacle non-profit.

    making progress

We’ve come a long way since the August 2021 lease signing. Interior renovation got underway almost immediately that fall. Casual observers peeking inside marveled at the artistry of the steel girder construction and often shared treasured memories of time spent with family and friends at Oakdale and in the Tabernacle.

    • Both general liability and directors and officers insurance were acquired and retained through Auto Owners Insurance.
    • The interior of the Tabernacle was cleared of the decaying stage, sound booth, and accumulated animal droppings, and the benches were moved to safe storage allowing a complete power washing of the interior in the fall of 2021.
    • Temporary repairs were made to cupola windows and missing shingles replaced.
    • A May 22, 2022 Grand Opening celebration saw several hundred supporters and well-wishers marvel at the interior beauty of this historic structure.
    • In the summer and early fall of 2022, volunteer groups scraped peeling paint and applied a coat of white primer/sealer to protect the wood siding from further deterioration.
    • An October 2, 2022 open house showcased the various improvements. Several hundred visitors were truly impressed by the work done to date with the fresh coat of white primer signaling to everyone that this historically important building is once again being taken care of!

However, major costly work remains to be professionally done. At the top of the list, a new roof is critical and this will require major financial support so that replacement can be done in the summer of 2023.

    Total Cost Estimates

    • Interior Concrete Repair $35,000
    • Replacement of Stage $25,000
    • Wood Siding Repair/Replacement $50,000
    • Painting $25,000
    • Window & Door Repair/Replacement $50,000
    • Landscaping $10,000
    • The above cost estimates may be reduced if materials and labor are donated.
